Comparing Fractions

Learn strategies to determine which fraction is larger or smaller.

25 minGrade 6

Introduction

Being able to compare fractions helps us understand relative sizes and make decisions in real life.

Same Denominator

When denominators are equal, compare numerators directly.

Example

5/8 > 3/8 because 5 > 3

Same Numerator

When numerators are equal, the fraction with the smaller denominator is larger.

Example

3/4 > 3/5 because fourths are larger pieces than fifths

Cross Multiplication

Multiply across to compare: a/b vs c/d, compare a×d with b×c.

Example

2/3 vs 3/5: 2×5=10, 3×3=9. Since 10>9, 2/3 > 3/5

Key Takeaways

  • 1Same denominator: larger numerator wins
  • 2Same numerator: smaller denominator wins
  • 3Use cross multiplication for different fractions
