Count up to 10 things
Say one number for each thing. The last number tells how many.

Point at one thing. Say 1. Point at the next. Say 2. Do not skip one. Do not count one twice.

The last number is the answer
You say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The last number is 5. So there are 5.

Move them as you go
Slide each counted thing to the side. Then you know which ones are left.
