Step 1

Learn it

  1. Fill the ten

8 + 5. The frame has 8. It needs 2 more to be full.

  2. Split the 5

Take 2 from the 5. That leaves 3.

  3. Add the rest

    The frame is full: 10. Now 10 + 3 = 13.

Step 2

Watch how

Two examples, worked out one step at a time.

  1. 8 + 5 = ?

    8 needs 2 to make 10. Split 5 into 2 and 3. 8 + 2 = 10. 10 + 3 = 13.

    Answer: 13
  2. 9 + 4 = ?

    9 needs 1 to make 10. Split 4 into 1 and 3. 9 + 1 = 10. 10 + 3 = 13.

    Answer: 13
