Add a ten

To add a ten, the tens digit goes up by one. The ones stay the same.

  1. Start with 34

    3 tens and 4 ones.

  2. Add one rod

    One more ten. Now 4 tens and 4 ones.

  3. Only the tens change

    34 + 10 = 44. The ones digit stays 4.
